Issue #41

Spring hits differently when you remember the water you paddle on needs you just as much as you need it. If you are in the USA it is almost time for Earth Day (April 22th) and this is your time to give back to Mother Earth in a big way.

📍 This Week’s Tip: Bring a Small Trash Bag

Nothing fancy. Just a simple bag tied to your deck bungee. Grab the floating bottle and snack wrapper you pass. It takes five seconds and adds up fast. If every paddler picked up three pieces of trash each session, most waterways would look a whole lot better by summer.

🛠 Gear Pick of the Week: Deck Mounted Trash Container or Bag

Take a day this April and go out for a paddle with the sole intention of picking up trash.

These things are clutch on cleanup days. Look for:

  • A large open top
  • Drain holes
  • Easy attachment points
  • Compact size so it doesn’t take all your deck space

For my last clean up paddle I used an old milk crate strapped to the board with a trash bag inside and this grabber thing that I borrowed from my 90 year old uncle (he has 9 others).

🌊 Spotlight: Organize a Local Cleanup Paddle

Pick a Saturday morning. Choose a short, accessible stretch of water. Post about it on your paddling groups. Keep the pitch simple. “One hour. Bring your board. Bring gloves. Let’s make our home waterway look better.”
You’d be shocked how many people show up when you give them an easy way to give back. Cleanup paddles build community, make your routes look nicer, and remind everyone that access to healthy water isn’t guaranteed. This is one of the easiest ways to make a real impact.

💬 Paddle Talk:

I once filled half a bag in ten minutes without even trying. Not a heroic effort. Just picking up the stuff that drifted into a quiet cove. It hit me how fast this problem grows when nobody does anything. And how fast it shrinks when even a handful of paddlers pay attention. It’s not about perfection, it’s about participation. The water doesn’t need heroes, it just needs helpers.

You might cramp up mid-paddle or drift farther than you planned. None of this is a crisis if you know what to do. But if you've never practiced getting back on your board in anything other than perfect conditions, that first real situation is going to suck. Let's work on that now, in controlled...
