Issue # 44

You're going to fall off your board. You're going to lose your paddle. You might cramp up mid-paddle or drift farther than you planned. None of this is a crisis if you know what to do. But if you've never practiced getting back on your board in anything other than perfect conditions, that first real situation is going to suck. Let's work on that now, in controlled conditions, before it matters.

πŸ“ This Week’s Tip: Self-Rescue Basics

You're going to fall off your board. You might lose your paddle. Conditions might get rougher than you planned. None of this is a crisis if you know what to do.

The problem? Most paddlers never practice self-rescue until they're in the middle of a situation that's already gone wrong. That's when you realize you have no idea how to get back on your board in choppy water, or how to swim your board back when you're too tired to stand.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Getting back on your board efficiently
  • What to do if you lose your paddle

These aren't hard skills. But they require practice in controlled conditions so your body knows what to do when your brain is busy dealing with the situation.

πŸ›  Gear Pick of the Week: Throw Rope

NRS 20' Rescue Throw Rope ($65)

If you paddle with a group or in moving water, a throw rope is the piece of gear that turns a sketchy situation into a quick save. Someone drifts too far, gets stuck, or needs help. You throw the rope. They grab it. Problem solved.

Not essential for solo flatwater paddlers. Potentially essential if you paddle rivers, groups, or challenging conditions.

🌊 Spotlight: Deep Water Practice Spots

Find a spot with deep, calm water and no boat traffic. Public swimming areas in the off-season work great. So do quiet coves or protected bays.

Bring a friend if you can. Not because it's dangerous, but because having someone nearby makes practice more relaxed. Plus they can film you so you can see what you're doing wrong.

Practice falling off, getting back on, losing your paddle, swimming your board. Make it boring. That's the point. When something actually goes wrong on the water, you want your response to be automatic, not improvised.

πŸ’¬ Paddle Talk: The Day I Couldn't Get Back On

A few years back, I went out in choppier conditions than I should have. Not dangerous, just messy. I caught an edge, went in, and suddenly realized I had no idea how to get back on my board when it wasn't flat and cooperative.

I tried pulling up from the side. Board tipped. I tried again. The board tipped again. I was getting tired. The shore wasn't that far, but it felt farther every time I failed to get back on.

Eventually I figured it out, but it took way longer than it should have. I was gassed. And embarrassed.

Now I practice self rescue in flat water a few times a season. Not because I'm paranoid. Because being competent feels better than being lucky.
