Issue # 42

Spring's here. Your board's been waiting. But if you're like most paddlers, you're about to grab your board, throw it on the car, and realize halfway to the water that you forgot half the stuff that keeps a good day from turning into a long, uncomfortable slog back to shore. Let's fix that before your first real paddle of the season.

πŸ“ This Week’s Tip: 10 SUP Essentials that Matter

The 10 SUP Essentials aren't about being paranoid. They're about keeping small problems small.

Flat water doesn't stay flat. Weather shifts. You drift farther than planned. A blister starts screaming halfway through your return paddle. None of this is dramatic, but it's exactly where the right gear makes the difference between a minor annoyance and a story that starts with "So this one time..."

Here's what matters: you don't need to overpack. You need the right basics so when something shifts (and it will), you've got options. Think of it as the difference between paddling confident and paddling nervous.

The Quick Checklist:

  1. PFD - one you actually wear
  2. Whistle - attached to your PFD
  3. Leash - matched to the conditions
  4. Food - that survives the day
  5. Sunscreen - waterproof
  6. Water - enough for your day
  7. Phone - in waterproof case
  8. Repair kit or multi-tool
  9. Extra layer - in a dry bag
  10. First Aid Kit - just the basic

None of this is optional if you're serious about paddling smarter. Get it dialed now, before the water warms up and you're too excited to think straight. Keep it all in a small dry bag, so you are ready when the water calls.

πŸ›  Gear Pick of the Week: PFD and Leash
(The
Non Negotiable's)

If you're only going to get two things right this season, make it these.

PFD - NRS Vapor ($110)

Low profile, doesn't ride up when you're moving, and comfortable enough that you'll actually wear it. Most PFDs feel like wearing a couch. This one doesn't.

Pros:

  • Excellent mobility for paddlers who move around on their board
  • Back panels keep you cooler
  • Adjustable side straps for a secure fit
  • Doesn't interfere with paddle stroke

Cons:

  • Pricier than budget options but worth it

Price Range: $100-$120
Verdict: If you want a PFD you won't hate wearing, this is it.

Leash - NRS Coiled SUP Leash ($60)

Your board is your biggest piece of safety gear. A leash keeps it with you when you fall. Flatwater paddlers want a coiled leash. River paddlers want a quick release. Using the wrong one is where people get into trouble.

Pros:

  • Coiled design stays out of the water and reduces drag
  • 10-foot length gives you room to move
  • Durable ankle cuff with comfortable neoprene padding
  • Swivel connection prevents tangling

Cons:

  • Not suitable for whitewater or surf conditions (get a quick-release for that)
  • Can pull slightly on your ankle during long paddles

Price Range: $60
Verdict: Reliable, functional, does the job without drama.

🌊 Spotlight: The First Paddle Back Can Be Weird

I went out last week for my first real paddle of the season. The water was glass and the weather was perfect. I felt like a hero for about 20 minutes.

Then my hands started complaining. Then I realized I didn’t have enough water. Then the wind picked up and I got a very clear reminder that winter balance is not summer balance.

Nothing went wrong, but nothing felt smooth either. First long paddle back never does. Your body's rusty. Your gear's been sitting. You forget things.

That's why spring prep matters. You're not just checking your board. You're remembering what actually goes into a good day on the water before you're too tired or too far from shore to do anything about it.

You might cramp up mid-paddle or drift farther than you planned. None of this is a crisis if you know what to do. But if you've never practiced getting back on your board in anything other than perfect conditions, that first real situation is going to suck. Let's work on that now, in controlled...

But here's the thing: most paddlers don't find out their gear is trashed until they're already on the water, halfway through a paddle, when a slow leak turns into a very long swim back.
